What is Bletchley Community Heritage Initiative?
The Bletchley Community Heritage Initiative Project has been based in Bletchley Library since 2000 and is inspired by the lives of local people and the events that have shaped Bletchley's past and recent History. It is a Living Archive Project where, involving people of all ages and backgrounds, memories are collected and then brought to life through books, exhibitions, web pages, CD Roms and textiles. These become the focus for community celebration and pride.

The BCHI has brought old and young together in a way that has led to new friendships and respect, and includes local school children researching the history of the community by interviewing older residents.

It involves the history of all the people of Bletchley, the 'old' villagers and the more recent estate dwellers, telling their stories and sharing their thoughts and experiences about current issues as well as the past.

BCHI has also provided exhibitions and displays for Local Town Council Carnivals, Local Schools, Bletchley Park and the Milton Keynes Library Service. It has given talks to local organisations and schools on the 'History of Bletchley' and is instrumental in organising historical projects on issues that are affecting Bletchley.

The friendly BCHI centre, staff and volunteers are based in Bletchley Library. This allows the community to view displays, archives and to reminisce to their hearts' content. It has permanent exhibition boards displaying pictures donated by the public. These are focused on themes and are selected fromand archive which has accumulated to almost 4000 photos of the area. There is access to a photo and local newspaper archive and help with research into local history.

Any person who has an interest in the History of Bletchley and would like to get involved in this centre should contact Herb Booth, the Community Heritage Officer at bchi.info@googlemail.com.
How Can You Help?
We are always looking for volunteers who may have some spare time on their hands and would like to help collect, collate and archive memorabilia, interview local people for their memories, helping to organise events or may even consider being on the advisory committee of our Community Heritage Initiative.

For this project to succeed we need as much help as we can from the whole community, no matter how small a part you think you can play, all offers of help will be gratefully received.
