I remember at Christmas, the store would open late specially for old folks and disabled so they could get their presents without fighting through the usual rush. We had mince pies and sherry too!

I have many memories of the Co-op departmental store but the one thing that fascinated me as a child was the mystery of the Clix system. On purchasing an item, trhe assistant would write your member's number on a check and with the cash it would be placed in a metal tube which travelled along a series of pipes to a secret place, the cash office. To me, it seemed quite magical, for a few minutes later, the tube would whizz back to the assistant with the correct change.
