The Railway Heritage of Bletchley

Times (and fashions) have changed since Lila Kent operated her signals. Lila managed to get away with wearing her own individual style of clothing as the offical uniform was so ugly, but Kay Robbins is happy to abide by the rulebook and is seen here in her smart uniform.

The old semaphore signals, lever frame signalboxes (along with crossing keepers huts) have disappeared and replaced by a computer-operated full colour-light signalling system.

At Fenny Stratford signalbox serving the Bletchley to Bedford line, signaller Kay Robbins, one of three female signallers on the route, prepared to shut up shop in the Autumn of 2004, days after closure the box was razed to the ground. 150 years of railway service and the workplace for hundreds of signallers over the years disappearing in a cloud of dust.

After four years service as a signaller Kay admitted she would be very sorry to be leaving what she termed her second home as she believed relocation to Ridgmont would prove to be more impersonal, nevertheless she understood it was necessary to move with the times as technology moved on.
